After Danny Rose lashed out at Tottenham for their stringent pay grade level and how tense the situation is in the locker room, the London club came under much scrutiny. Coupled with an initially dull and inactive transfer window, much hue was sensed to be brewing for Mauricio Pochettino and company.
And now, it appears that all is still not well, as another defender has put up an ultimatum. Center-back Toby Alderweireld and agent Stijn Francis have reportedly told the club that if renewed and improved terms are not offered, the defender will be on his way out.
Toby’s contract has an interesting clause should the club renew his deal till 2019. As a result of this, a secondary clause will be activated, through which the Belgian can be transferred for a modest fee of €25million.
Having already secured Davinson Sanchez for a club record fee of €40 million as well as highly-rated full-back Serge Aurier from PSG, the London side looks very comfortable in defense – arguably one of the best in the top flight.
The further signing of youngster Juan Foyth also provides great breathing space in that department, following the departure of a talented defender like Kyle Walker.
As of such, the club might offload Toby after all rather than keeping an unhappy talent in tow. A reported eight clubs are interested in him, including Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City, with the Mancunian side seemingly having the edge in securing his services.
However, it is also a possibility that Spurs will agree to the player’s wage demands and quieten down the draconic personality they have developed when it comes to keeping their talent happy.
