With a slow start to the new Premier League campaign, Arsenal have already prepared to make amends during the winter transfer window by signing Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka.

The German is a wanted man among Europe’s top clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Manchester United. Moreover, the chances of him leaving the Bundesliga side have risen due to his contract, which expires next year.

However, according to Mirror, the Gunners are believed to be favourites to sign Goretzka right now, despite strong interest from Liverpool and Barcelona. Arsene Wenger has had scouts keeping tabs on the talented midfielder, and has been monitoring him for about a month now.

The Arsenal boss is in search of a midfielder to be reckoned with, and his senior scouts have suggested the name of Goretzka, but there has been no formal contact with the player so far.

The Schalke star himself, however, is reportedly eyeing a move to either Bayern Munich or Barcelona in order to further flourish his career. Though the Catalans are reportedly interested in bringing in the German international, a move in January seems highly unlikely due to the club’s spending spree during the summer transfer window.

Regardless, the player and the club are both interested in working with each other, which seems like a tough obstacle for the Premier League giants. However, the Londoners are ready to go head-to-head with their competitors and cash out in excess, if necessary.

With the 22-year-old’s current deal with the German side set to see its end next year, Wenger’s side does possess an advantage to prize him away to the Emirates with the promise of first-team action.
