With Lionel Messi’s contract extension at Barcelona up in the air, Manchester City are keen on providing an offer capable of shattering the world record.

The Catalan giants had officially announced the extension of Lionel Messi’s contract until 2021 on July 5. But thereafter, it was conspicuous that there was a need to deal with the minor consequences, and that remained unexplained.

With just a few months left in his current deal, the Spanish giants have tried to emanate an air of calm. They have repeated that everything was signed, and that there remains no need to worry. However, the skillful forward is yet to have his photograph taken with the president, Josep María Bartomeu.

Meanwhile, City boss Pep Guardiola, who had spent four years working with the mercurial Argentine at Camp Nou, considers the player to be the greatest of his era, and a footballer who makes the game look simple. They collected an enviable haul of major honours together, with Guardiola the tactical mastermind and Messi the on-field inspiration.

And Pep, ever since taking over as a manager at City, has had eyes on swooping the La Masia graduate. With the help of his current Premier League club’s budget, the Spanish tactician could make a world record offer with ease. And amidst the uncertainty in the forward’s contract, the former Bayern boss is alert to the possibility of tabling an offer.

According to AS, the Citizens are willing to offer a hefty price of €400m, which would shatter the fee paid by PSG to sign Neymar from the Catalonian club. Also, sources close to the Premier League club reveal that “serious conversations have been held with the footballer’s inner circle,” although it is yet to be confirmed.

Keeping the speculations regarding Los Cules’ forward’s future aside, he is reportedly content with his life at Barcelona. To top it off, the decorated forward is aware that his wife, Antonella, would not be acting in favour of moving the family. Regardless, his current deal with the Spanish club meets its deadline on June 30, 2018.
