Manchester United’s chief scout Javier Ribalta and head of development John Murtagh reportedly watched on as 16-year-old Embalo took part in Benfica Under-19s’ UEFA Youth League tie with United in Lisbon on Wednesday.
The young forward, who has been modeled as the ‘next Cristiano Ronaldo’, can play up front or as a winger. He came on as a second-half substitute in the match which ended as a draw, after United showed character to overcome a 2-goal deficit and secured an incredible draw.
It’s claimed that the Premier League giants have been keeping their eyes close on Embalo for over a year, and are looking to prise him away from Benfica next summer.
The Red Devils may have to act fast, as reports proclaim that United are not the only European heavyweights interested in the youngster, who was born in Guinea-Bissau, but represents Portugal. Several other European giants, including Real Madrid, are also looking to sign the talented teenager.
Benfica attacker Joao Felix, 17, and midfielder Joao Filipe, 18, are also on United’s radar. Felix, who has already represented Benfica B and been called up by Portugal’s U21s, is rated as one of the country’s top prospects. Joao Filipe previously spent a period on trial at United, and is believed to be open to a move to Old Trafford one day.
Both Felix and Filipe were part of the Benfica team which reached the final of the UEFA Youth League last season. However, the latter’s immediate future appears to be in Lisbon, having recently signed a long-term deal which would keep him at the club until 2022.
