Kylian Mbappe: Golden Boy 2017 Announced
Kylian Mbappe overcame competition from Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele and City’s Gabriel Jesus to win the Golden Boy 2017 award by a big margin, previously won by the likes of Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, Mario Gotze, Isco, and Sergio Aguero.
The Paris Saint-German striker won the French League with Monaco, reached the semi-finals of Champions League, earned his first International cap, and become (potentially) the second most expensive player in the footballing era, all in a year. It’s been a dream year for the striker who has practically achieved everything possible for a teenager, and it’s fair to say he deserved to win the coveted award.
Mbappe had been on a three-man shortlist, facing a tough battle from Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus and Barcelona new boy Ousmane Dembele, but according to this morning’s edition of TuttoSport, the French prodigy has scooped the award. The results published showed Rashford third, with four more voting points (76) than the Brazilian (72).
Mbappe (291) and Dembele (149) were some way ahead, with the PSG star succeeding last year’s winner, Renato Sanches – who failed to make the top 10 – as the winner of the award.
There was a strong Serie A interest in the remainder of the top 10, with Gianluigi Donnarumma, Federico Chiesa, and Rodrigo Bentancur, while Emre Mor, Christian Pulisic and Kasper Dolberg were also present.
All nominees must be under the age of 21 and play in a European nation’s top tier. Each voter is allowed to nominate five players, the juror will allocate 10 points to the player that they perceive as the most impressive, seven for second, five third, three fourth, and one point for fifth most impressive. The player with the most points wins, simple as that.
Mbappe scored 26 goals in 44 matches for Monaco last season, and has already netted 4 times in 8 appearances for PSG this season, not to forget his sensational moves which would make any defender want to retire.
