Manchester United’s illustrious number 7 jersey has been left without a worthy wearer for far too long in the opinion of several fans and experts alike.

Antonio Valencia, Angel Di Maria, and Memphis Depay have all failed to live up to the magic that Cristiano Ronaldo last worked on the crowds of Old Trafford whilst wearing the iconic number.

However, one of United’s most awaited transfer targets has reportedly expressed his desire to wear the shirt and take on the unsaid responsibilities that come with it.

As per Don Balon, Antoine Griezmann has picked the number before his move to Old Trafford – a transfer that has been in the making for far too long.

Nearly completed late into the transfer window, the deal was stalled after the 26-year-old forward elected to stay with Atletico Madrid through their transfer ban period.

But after reports emerged of Mourinho personally flying to Madrid to set things in motion, the move seems more and more likely to come to fruition.

Gareth Bale is another star in Spain that United have been linked to, but the Portuguese tactician is believed to have prioritized acquiring the Frenchman instead.

The same source added that the deal in question will be a five-year-long contract, and Griezmann might be willing to sign a pre-contract agreement with the Premier League giants should they agree to activate his £89.4 million release clause.

This is accompanied by reports that Barcelona is another destination that the player has in mind, and the supposed interest in United could also be a sly bid to raise the asking price and hold out for a better deal.

However, the management of the Camp Nou outfit might not be too eager to make the signing, in which event the Red jersey is destined for Griezmann.
