Man Utd were forced to make Angel Gomes an offer he couldn’t refuse to keep him away from the likes of Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund, according to reports.

After months of speculation regarding his future, Gomes finally committed himself to United last month, having been the subject of interest from several top clubs around Europe, and it was by no means an easy feat convincing him to stay.

Testament to that is the fact that according to The Sun, the youngster’s first ever professional contract is seeing him earn a weekly wage of £17,000, which is an insane amount for a 17-year-old star.

However, the fact that Man Utd – a club that generally prefers to start its academy graduates off on very little pay before gradually increasing it as they break into the first team – were ready to offer Gomes such a high salary shows just how highly he is rated at the club.

Many consider the Englishman to be one of the brightest young talents in the world, let alone English football. The starlet could eventually see his weekly pay packet rise to around £25,000 once he breaks into the first team and continues his stunning development.

To put it into perspective, Marcus Rashford is on £50,000-a-week, which is exactly double of what Gomes could earn in a few seasons, despite the striker being a central figure in Jose Mourinho’s plans. On the contrary, Gomes has made just one first-team appearance to date.

An Old Trafford source said: “The club have coughed up a lot of money for Angel to keep him here. He’s got a series of bonuses and incentives in there as well.

“It is big money for this club to give out. We do not like to give our youngsters too much, too soon usually. It is a helluva deal for the young man.”
