Manchester United are keeping tabs on Celtic youngster Kieran Tierney, as they plan out a list of alternatives if their move for Danny Rose falls through.
Jose Mourinho has been desperate to secure the signature of Rose for quite a while now, and the Englishman himself has seemed lenient towards the move. Spurs, though, are not too keen on letting go of one of their best players, and have asked for a massive £50m from United.
The Old Trafford outfit does have the money, but they are unsure as to whether the 27-year-old is worth it.
With Mourinho pointing out that his rival Pep Guardiola is spending as much money on defenders at Manchester City as normal clubs do on strikers, he will probably be expecting his board to take that as a hint and do the same.
If the move ends up falling apart, United do have an alternative in mind. Celtic’s Kieran Tierney is only 20 years old, but has already been trusted with the captaincy of his club.
The youngster has put in consistent displays and is very highly rated around Europe. The Red Devils’ scouts have reportedly been tracking him for the last two seasons now, and are aware of his incredible talent.
According to reports in The Mirror, Tierney would prove to be a far cheaper option, and would represent great value for money at just £25 million, despite signing a new six-year contract with the club in October.
Mourinho would obviously prefer a more experienced player, but Tierney appears to be a good option for the long term. His ability to play at right-back also plays a massive part in United’s interest, and the club may secure his signature this month or in the summer.
Luke Shaw has been reintroduced into the fold in recent weeks, and has done a magnificent job. However, doubts still remain over his capability to maintain his form, and hence, his future is up in the air at the moment.
None of United’s other full-backs have managed to make the position their own, and so, it is imperative for Mourinho that the issue is solved if he wants his side to offer more of a competition to City at the top of the table next season.
