Why Manchester United Have A ‘Serious’ Chance Of Signing Samuel Umtiti

Manchester United are keeping an eye on Samuel Umtiti’s situation at Barcelona, and have already approached the club about a move, according to reports.

Umtiti has been a revelation for the Catalan giants since his move to the club from Lyon at the start of last season, and they are eager to tie him down to a new contract, so as to keep him away from the prying eyes of Europe’s elite clubs.

However, they have struggled to do so due to the player’s astronomical wage demands. His current deal sees him earn £3.5m-a-year, but he has asked for a significant rise – double, if reports are to believed – and Barca are just not willing to offer him that much.

The 24-year-old has not been impressed by his club’s refusal to meet his demands, and if an agreement cannot be reached, other clubs may start a bidding war.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has been desperate to get rid of the deadwood and make substantial improvements to his shaky defense. Securing the signature of Umtiti would be a first step towards doing just that, and he would be a pretty cheap buy as well.

With the inflation in the market, it is next to impossible to a sign a world-class player for anything less than a mammoth fee that would have seemed unrealistic just a year or two ago.

However, Umtiti has a release clause in his contract worth around £54 million, which would be peanuts for a club like Manchester United.

If the defender fails to agree a deal to stay put at the Nou Camp, it is safe to say that Old Trafford will be waiting with arms wide open.
