Raphael Varane has confirmed that Manchester United have shown an interest in signing him, although there has been no direct contact between the club and the player.
United have been interested in Varane since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson, and have continued to keep tabs on the Frenchman despite multiple failed attempts to prise him away from Real Madrid.
Now that Jose Mourinho – who bought Varane for Real from Lens – is United’s manager, the interest appears to have been ramped up.
The pair share a good relationship, and Mourinho has been keen to reunite with the 24-year-old at Old Trafford.

In a recent interview with El Larguero, Varane admitted that there has been contact, although it hasn’t been directly with him. The centre-back revealed: ‘No, not directly. There were contacts, but not directly.’
Varane also spoke about the types of attacking players he likes to play against, and quite aptly brought up Romelu Lukaku’s name. He claims that the striker is the strongest in the world, and he enjoys facing off against such players.
‘I feel more comfortable with fast players because I try to control the depth,’ he said. ‘For my qualities, it’s what I prefer.
‘When they are stronger I try to pass in front, that I cannot play. Like Lukaku, for example. He is the strongest forward in the world. It is pure power. You have to play differently. I try to be more complete to annoy any striker.’
