Player Ratings: Brighton 1-0 Manchester United
Brighton stunned Manchester United 1-0 at home to earn three valuable points to ensure safety in their 2017-18 Premier League campaign.
The hosts dominated the game throughout against a tedious United. Pascal Gross scored the only goal of the game to hurt the inconsistent visitors.
Here’s how Jose Mourinho’s men fared during the crunch encounter at the Amex stadium:
David de Gea: 8
The best player on the pitch for United. De Gea made another outstanding save to his right to prevent Glenn Murray from scoring the opener. He was kept busy, but he stood tall. Could not do much for the goal conceded.
Matteo Darmian: 3
Nothing much on offer while going forward, and was culpable for Brighton’s goal.
Chris Smalling: 5
Looked a bit shaky and could not quite grow as the game progressed.
Marcos Rojo: 5
Was a bit rusty, but made some vital challenges when needed. Tried his best with a stretch to save the goal-bound shot but failed.
Ashley Young: 6
Better amongst the defenders that played. Worked hard both defensively and going forward.
Marouane Fellaini: 5
Did not pose a threat in the game. Lost the ball at times, and one almost scared United, with De Gea denying a cross.
Nemanja Matic: 5
Not the presence which he usually enjoys as a defensive midfielder. Wasn’t strong enough on most times.
Paul Pogba: 3
Did not influence as much he would have liked to. The Frenchman did not have the tempo to create much, and did not possess any threat.
Juan Mata: 4
Missed a glorious chance from a free-kick in the second half. Did not provide the threat from the right.
Marcus Rashford: 5
Took too long to feed a free Anthony Martial and spoiled the crucial chance in the first half. His passes were poor. Had only one shot on goal that required a save from the Brighton keeper.
Anthony Martial: 3
Disappointed on numerous occasions with the final pass and the desired shot. Looked very low on confidence.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Jesse Lingard: 4
Looked fresh in attack and had a shot on target moments after coming on in place of Fellaini. Missed a sitter later on under pressure from Shane Duffy.
Luke Shaw: 5
Came in to provide some attacking threat down the left, but did not have much of it.
Scott McTominay: 5
Did not have much influence on the game.
