United are set to make a shock move for Dries Mertens in the summer, as per reports.

The Belgian international has been a prolific goalscorer for Napoli over the past two seasons, with 43 goals to his name. However, he looks destined to leave the club this summer if reports in Il Mattino are to be believed.

The report suggests that the striker, whose contract with the club was due to expire last summer before they extended it till 2020, now looks set to move to China.

United are bereft of a quality goalscorer to stand in for Romelu Lukaku, and so, despite Mertens being 30 years old, they might be interest in a move.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have both played as strikers to much success, but with Jose Mourinho eager to continue using them on the left wing, Mertens would be an ideal backup for Lukaku.

The striker would not even cost the club much, as he reportedly has a release clause of just €28 million in his current contract.

Mourinho has repeatedly stated that he is only going to focus his spending on signing defenders and midfielders in the summer though, so the rumours appear to be baseless and unfounded at the moment.
