The next big thing that awaits Manchester United this season is a potential FA Cup triumph, as the Red Devils face Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday.

However, the Mancunian giants could potentially have an immense announcement even before that, welcoming their first summer signing.

During their last home game of the season, United bid farewell to Michael Carrick, and that leaves an important spot in their squad. Mourinho is also apprehensive of whether or not Fellaini will renew his contract at Old Trafford, and has repeatedly claimed that a midfielder will be their marquee signing.

Now, as per Daily Star, the club has made contact with representatives of Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred, and are working towards a final deal. The source added that a transfer in the range of £40 million might be on the table.

The Brazilian has been linked with both Manchester City and Manchester United since before the winter window itself, but several claims as of recent state that Mourinho has emerged on top after City backed out of the running.

Much speculation has surrounded the deal, with multiple sources from Ukraine claiming that Fred will assuredly move to Manchester in the summer.

The 25-year-old midfielder is also named in Brazil’s provisional squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia next month, and will be seeking to make a good run of games for his nation.

His arrival will certainly alleviate some of United’s midfield woes. However, with reports of Herrera departing to Spain also doing the rounds, Mourinho may find himself precariously undermanned in the crucial position.

Youngster Scott McTominay has been given a start on several occasions this season, and could provide great respite there. But Mourinho has a knack for working with world-class talent, and may still make a dip into the market.

But for now, will Fred don the Red jersey before the World Cup commences?
