Man United have made a £55 million bid for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.

Jose Mourinho is in dire need of defensive reinforcements, and he intends to strengthen his entire backline before the start of next season, as well as offload some of his current underperforming defenders.

The Red Devils have been linked with several players, but if the latest report from Manchester Evening News is to be believed, the Mancunian giants are set to make Spurs’ Toby Alderweireld their topmost priority for this transfer window.

According to the report, an inside source from the club has claimed that United are prepared to make the Belgian international their most expensive defensive signing of all time, by submitting a £55m offer for his services.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are also eager to sell the 29-year-old as early as possible, due to the fact that the player has a £25m release clause in his current contract which will get activated next summer.

Furthermore, Mauricio Pochettino also wishes to offload many of his current players, including Alderweireld, so as to generate funds for apt replacements that would improve his team.

With the centre-back’s move from Spurs to Manchester United profiting all parties at the moment, this transfer is likely to be a done deal provided another interested party doesn’t enter the fray with a better offer.
