Luka Modric broke a long streak when he won the Ballon d’Or earlier this week. The Croatian’s grabbing the title was the first time in 10 years that a player apart from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi attained the big prize.

All in all, it was quite a predictable victory given other accolades that he captured last season, although many still wondered if his former Real Madrid teammate could have still made the cut and inched away the title.

However, one man has an entirely different view altogether, and even though it may have been said in jest, the notion may hold true.

Speaking to Fox News, Zlatan Ibrahimovic said the following about Modric bagging the prize: “Now we know it was Perez who was competing with Messi.”

The Swede was referring to the fact that a Real Madrid player has won the Ballon d’Or for five of the last six years, an unprecedented feat for any club.

This is quite telling of the role that Perez plays at the Bernabeu, with it long being clear that his vision drives much of what occurs on the pitch.

Even Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus earlier this season seemed to hold hints that Perez and the other higher-ups at the La Liga club simply didn’t value the Portuguese forward as they had in the past.

Of course, for Zlatan’s words to ring true, the man must first find a way to rescue their present season from its rather precarious position. In order to do so, they will certainly need an individual to put in the kind of showing that will merit a Ballon d’Or.

The season is still relatively young, and it will be interesting to see what else Perez has cooking with regard to the future of Los Blancos.
