They say it isn’t classy to rub salt on open wounds, but few people just can’t help it. Manchester United disappointed their supporters yet again when they lost 2-1 to Valencia during their final Champions League group game.

Even though they had qualified for the Round of 16 prior to the trip to Spain, the fact that winning would have put them up top does burn.

The opener was scored quite convincingly by Carlos Soler in the first half. Hoping to come back, United’s second half went right out the window when Phil Jones embarrassingly put the ball beyond Sergio Romero right into his own net, scoring his 4th own-goal in a United shirt.

Even though Marcus Rashford injected some hope into the side with his late header, Jones’ mistake was enough to gift the Spanish side their victory. Needless to say, the English defender was trolled hard for his mistake, but the biggest one came from a player who had just won against him.

Bleacher Report had decided to point out on Twitter that Michy Batshuayi had worn batman boots for the fixture. However, the Belgian decided to not let the conversation stay on his boots, tweeting the following in reply: “Glad you like guys… but can we talk about Phil Jones face first ? 😂 #anotherone”.

Needless to say, the Manchester United defender did have an intriguing expression on his face, the sorts of which have been memed quite successfully on past occasions.

An injury to Victor Lindelof had gifted Jones the starting spot as of recent, but the 26-year-old has had very disappointing games so far. Against Valencia, in addition to his obvious own goal, Jones was also at fault for the opener.

These showings won’t make life easy for him, given how Jose Mourinho is already running furious with the club’s lack of defensive maestros. An easy winter exit?
