Squad-building is a tricky affair as of recent. While the transfer market does provide ample opportunity for investing in budding players, there is always the threat of spending money where it is best not to.

Such rash moves often result in regret down the line and Manchester United as a club have had their fair share of regret over the years.

Some of their biggest signings have failed to materialize and despite establishing themselves as a European spending power they have little to show for it.

Despite that, the upcoming transfer window is one where the side is expected to spend big yet again and perhaps for the last time for quite a while.

Now, Football Ghana reports that Thomas Partey is a player who is actively being targeted by the Red Devils. The 25-year-old Ghana midfielder currently plies his trade for Atletico Madrid and has carved his name as one of the finest in the defensive midfield position.

The report claims that United are willing to activate the release clause embedded in his contract which is allegedly in the region of £43.5 million.

However, the Mancunian outfit aren’t the only ones interested in the midfielder with Inter Milan and Arsenal also on the lookout although the price may put off both those sides.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could view Partey as the ideal replacement for Ander Herrera in the heart of his roster. It has long been established that Paul Pogba works best when defensive duties aren’t competing for his attention as well.

As of such a player like the Atletico Madrid star could be the ideal investment for the squad to bring the best out of the Frenchman, provided he even stays at Old Trafford beyond this season.

However, the sum isn’t a small one by any means and with their forward and defensive lines also requiring reinforcements, it isn’t clear whether the Red Devils will spare this much on the midfielder.
