Manchester United are “very close” to signing Matthijs De Ligt.

The Red Devils’ persistent pursuit for a world-class centre-back has brought them to Ajax’s doors, as they have entered the race for arguably the most sought-after defender on the planet: Matthijs De Ligt.

Barcelona were believed to be the favourites to land the Dutchman, but the Catalan giants have reportedly refused to improve their initial bid for the player, which has led super agent Mino Raiola to look at other potential suitors for his superstar client.

Now, the reigning La Liga champions appear to have suffered a huge blow in this transfer saga, all thanks to Manchester United.

According to Catalan radio station RAC1, the Mancunian giants have tabled an offer that is “too good to turn down”, and the Ajax captain is now “very close” to sealing a move to Old Trafford.

While no agreement is in place just yet, the Premier League club seems to have moved into pole position to complete this sensational signing.

If successful, Manchester United will have pulled off one of their most important signings since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, as De Ligt could end up being a major player for the club for a decade at the least.

The 19-year-old’s arrival at the Theatre of Dreams will not only boost the team’s defence, but also help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer take a major step towards redemption.
