When Jose Mourinho set out to find his elusive Brazilian, the arrival of Fred injected a lot of hope into Manchester United fans. The Manchester City interest angle made the player all the more fascinating and the pricetag he boasted of further added to the hype.

However, the initial performances of the South American didn’t inspire much joy and the change in management further jeopardized Fred’s transition to English football.

As of such, this season was touted to be a massive reset for him under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but even that got off to a rocky start.

The Times reveals that Fred was the butt of jokes of his teammates for a decision he made in the pre-season.

The Brazilian decided to get married on July 14th and hence sought leave from the ongoing pre-season tour at the time. The report claims that the former Shakhtar Donetsk player assumed that he would be part of Brazil’s squad in the Copa America and hence scheduled his wedding and time off accordingly.

However, he was left out of the squad and had to request Solskjaer for leave, a move that was sanctioned.

The ensuing consequence of the absence was that Fred didn’t find an easy route into first-team football when the season commenced. Solskjaer had made it clear that all players who would be fulfilling a major role in the club would be trained in the pre-season itself.

As of such, it took several months before he was injected back into the matchday squads and to largely positive results. In Europe, in particular, he managed to bring the precise level of quality that United needs.

Now, injury will likely bring Fred back into the starting lineup when United clash against Liverpool on Sunday. Will this game be the redeeming moment for the Brazilian, or will he go down along with the sinking ship?
