Twitter Reacts To Harry Maguire Being Named United’s Permanent Captain
United will bid farewell to Ashley Young as the English left-back moves to Inter Milan.
Young’s departure will mean that only Phil Jones and David De Gea remain amongst the lads that last lifted the Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson in a starkly different era.
However, at the age of 35, this move was a long time coming for the club veteran and will certainly be one that will be lauded by United supporters.
At the same time, the Red Devils also lost their club captain, as Young was officially given the title at the start of the season.
Now, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Harry Maguire will be the club’s full-time captain, an appointment that is likely to continue on for the long-term.

This is certainly an incredible feat for the centre-back who was signed from Leicester City only the past summer and has statistically been the shortest time period that a player has had to spend at the club before being named captain in several decades altogether.
Twitter was riddled with United supporters who certainly had their thoughts about this appointment.

Longevity does not automatically grant captaincy. DDG has been a fantastic servant and captain at times but Ole works with the players every single day, if he deems Maguire a better leader within the squad then he is the right man for the role. Back him. #MUFC pic.twitter.com/3XQ0xtZYqi

David De Gea carries these clowns for 3 seasons in a row. Harry Maguire walks in, plays 20 games and gets the captain armband ahead of De Gea because slabhead.

McTominay would be a better captain than Maguire

There were certainly a few who were critical of the choice, especially since United’s defensive numbers haven’t improved all that much since Maguire’s arrival in the summer.
Further still, the likes of David De Gea were also thought to be in the running for the spot and there were also those who felt that the goalkeeper ought to have been the one to receive the arm-band instead.
What heights will the Mancunian club achieve under Maguire’s full-time captaincy?
