Derby day was a special affair for Manchester United who succeeded in dominating their local rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday. The scoreline stood a convincing 2-0 at the end of full time, with goals from Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay proving enough to cement United’s win.

Martial’s goal came at the back of a brilliant pass from Bruno Fernandes from a free-kick, one that Ederson couldn’t do much to keep out. Likewise, the City goalkeeper was at fault in the 97th minute as well when added time clearance went straight to the feet of McTominay whose long-shot goal was simply glorious.

The players were ecstatic at the win and some of their social media reactions say it all.

Mason Greenwood was an unused substitute on the bench during the game but the prolific forward who is Manchester United’s academy product knew what to tweet at the end, rejoicing the victory.

Likewise, club captain Harry Maguire knew the worth of the hard-fought win and cleansheet and also knew the magical words despite being a new arrival to the club.

It was Odion Ighalo, however, who was extending his fairy tale stay at United and a derby appearance was just what he needed. In fact, it was his excellent holding play that led to the late goal and his tweet says it all.

Anthony Martial’s social media reaction on his Instagram story was a more subtle one with the Frenchman showing the battle-scars from the win. The scrape-marks are likely from the start of the second-half when the Frenchman tried to take advantage of yet another Ederson mistake but the keeper’s ensuing scrappy tackle saw Martial’s feet go straight into the goalpost, resulting in this injury.

Nevertheless, the win was worth it.

Scott McTominay also took to Instagram to celebrate the win and the academy graduate knew his roots all too well.

The sheer brilliance of the victory and the numerical value attached to it all with regard to precedents shattered and decade-long blanks being filled is certainly remarkable.

This group of players at Old Trafford know the value of the badge they play for and the passion is evident. Now they have to form a more consistent and cogent unit to taste glory yet again.
