Manchester United recently secured the signature of Donny van de Beek on a five-year deal.
Following the club’s announcement, Ole Gunnar Solskjær explained the reason behind signing the 23-year-old.
“Donny has all of the technical attributes needed to perform in this team and has the personality required to succeed at Manchester United,” the Norwegian tactician told the club’s official website.
“His ability to see space, time his movements and read the game will really complement the qualities that we have in midfield and his arrival really strengthens the depth of talent we have in that position.
The Ajax academy graduate plays in a similar position to Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, and is largely expected is act as a back-up for the duo.
Hence, United’s decision to reportedly splash out £35m to bring van de Beek to Old Trafford sparked criticism from some sections of the media.
However, former Premier League midfielder Darren Fletcher believes the Red Devils have got themselves a bargain.
“He’s a top-class player and I think he’s a fantastic signing,” said the Scot.
“For somebody at his age, for that price, I think it’s a no-brainer.
“I saw him during Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals last season [in 2018/19], he was probably one of the catalysts for that. What I like about him is his flexibility in midfield.
“He understands when he needs to be a no.10 and what he has to do and he understands when he has to be a box-to-box midfielder; he’s got that Ajax upbringing in him and is a cultured footballer.
Fletcher is certainly echoing the thoughts of most supporters who are eager for de Beek’s time at United to fully kick-off. Solskjær has purchased a lot of options and freedom to lineup with this single signing and how he succeeds at executing it will make all the difference in the end.
