Man United have all but formalised a deal to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, and are now allegedly preparing to sign Jules Kounde as well.

Kounde was part of the France squad – alongside Varane – in the recently concluded European Championship. Now, he could follow his compatriot to England.

As per the Daily Mail, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s priority lies in strengthening his defence. This is despite the presence of Harry Maguire and his soon-to-be partner at centre-back Raphael Varane.

Kounde is also capable of playing at right-back, and lined up alongside the 2018 World Cup winner in the same position against Portugal in the Euros.

However, the pacey defender is likely to cost way more than the £35m plus add-ons the Premier League outfit agreed to pay to Real for Varane, as he remains under contract until 2024 at Sevilla.

Tottenham Hotspur, who announced the signing of Bryan Gil from Sevilla on Monday, are also interested in Kounde, but the player desires Champions League football. However, the 22-year-old would be assured of a starting spot at Spurs, especially after Toby Alderweireld’s exit.

Meanwhile at Old Trafford, Axel Tuanzebe looks set to leave on loan in search of consistent game time, as he would be pushed further down the pecking order after Varane’s arrival.
