Manchester United fans will be singing away to glory as their side registered an opening day treat for the ages. A 5-1 win over a rival like Leeds United at the start of a season where they hope to end their trophy drought is truly the stuff of dreams.

Bruno Fernandes’ hattrick stole the limelight on an evening when Raphael Varane was unveiled and Jadon Sancho was handed his Premier League debut as a substitute. Mason Greenwood and Fred were the other goal contributors for the fixture, even as Luke Ayling’s attempt at damage control via an early equalizer was forgotten.

The game was riddled with talking points, but fans will be particularly excited about how Pogba and Fernandes linked up in front of the Old Trafford faithful.

Such was their shared excellence that it would truly have been difficult to argue what between Fernandes’ hattrick and Pogba’s four assists deserved a Man of the Match accolade.

Back when the Portuguese star was first acquired by United, there was plenty of speculation as to how Solskjær would fit him in a lineup that would make the most out of their shared skills.

In this fixture, the Norwegian elected to go for a 4-2-3-1 with Pogba on the flank. However, Fernandes’ speculated central attacking spot often saw him function as a false nine too. The result was Pogba furnishing two out of three of Fernandes’ goals.

Further, the fact that all of this arrived in quick succession is something Solskjær will be pleased about.

Even as Pogba’s future continues to be mired in some doubt, such a display does make one concentrate on matters on the pitch for the time being.
