Phil Jones is impressing Ralf Rangnick and would have been involved in Manchester United’s Champions League tie against Young Boys if not for ineligibility.

The Englishman had fallen far down the pecking order during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign. His last appearance for the first-team was almost two years ago back in January of 2020.

However, according to The Athletic, Rangnick has taken a liking to the defender and was even ready to give him a chance at first-team football in the Champions League.

The German reportedly wanted to include the centre-back in his side’s clash against Young Boys a week ago. But as he was not included in the Champions League squad list by Solskjaer, he was not eligible to take part in the fixture.

Nevertheless, the new boss is said to have been impressed by the England international who was named on the bench for United’s last four Premier League outings.

In fact, the veteran has reportedly asked to be played for the Under-23s against Chelsea in order to improve his match fitness and break into the first-team again.

Fitness is something the 29-year-old really needs to focus on as he has been riddled with injuries throughout his career. Jumping straight into the heat of the Premier League may not be the best course of action to take as of now.

On the other hand, with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof back in form, it seems unlikely that the former Blackburn Rovers man will get his chance any time soon. Especially with Raphael Varane close to returning to the team, Jones’ chances are looking very slim.
