Manchester United are close to finalising the appointment of Erik ten Hag as their new manager, after deciding the Ajax boss is more suited to the role than Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino.

The Red Devils are now working on ironing out the final details with Ajax and Ten Hag in the next few days.

Once everything is concluded, United will jump into the transfer market to start their rebuild, and they don’t have to look too far for at least one of the many signings they are expected to make in the summer.

According to The Sun, Ten Hag will push United to sign Wolves star Ruben Neves once he’s placed at the helm. He’s among Ten Hag’s priority transfer targets.

The Ajax boss has been a ‘huge fan’ of the midfielder and has followed his development since he watched him play for Porto. Neves was handed the armband for Porto’s Champions League game at the age of 18 before he moved to England’s second-tier to play for Wolves in 2017.

The 25-year-old is now an established Portugal international, and has been improving season after season in the Premier League. His ability to retain possession and create from deep will certainly bolster United’s midfield issues.

However, Neves thrives in a box to box role, meaning United will still need to sign one more midfielder to play behind him and make Ten Hag’s system tick.
