Manchester United are set for a defensive overhaul after enduring their worst season in Premier League history, but Harry Maguire will remain a key part of the squad.

The Red Devils’ backline were on the end of several humiliations during the recently concluded campaign. Relegated Burnley conceded fewer goals than United.

Wholesale changes are expected in the defensive department this summer, with United prepared to let as many as three centre-backs depart the club.

Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, and Phil Jones are all surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, as per the Manchester Evening News.

Bailly never truly managed to win Ralf Rangnick’s favour, while Phil Jones only made two league starts, and was subbed off at half-time in United’s 4-0 thrashing at Liverpool. Tuanzebe’s loan spell at Napoli was underwhelming, to say the least.

United also intend to rejuvenate their defence by signing a new centre-back in the upcoming transfer window.

There is an interest in Villarreal’s Pau Torres, and the club have even consulted Erik ten Hag on the possibility of recruiting the Spaniard. It is claimed that initial talks have taken place to ‘gauge the possibility’ of a switch for the Champions League semi-finalist.

Meanwhile, Maguire is not going anywhere. Ten Hag, in his introductory press conference on Monday, said he’s looking forward to working with the English defender.
