How Frenkie de Jong reacted after Wout Weghorst scored his first Man Utd goal
Manchester United have one foot in the final of the League Cup after a convincing 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the first-leg semi-final tie at the City Ground.
Marcus Rashford maintained his new-found habit of scoring for fun and put the visitors in command of the clash with a sixth-minute opener. The English winger picked the ball from his own half, ran towards Forest defenders as if they were not there, and beat goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey with a wrong-foot finish.
Forest showed some signs of coming back into the game, but United’s firepower in attack proved too much for the hosts, who ended up conceding two further goals to Wout Weghorst and Bruno Fernandes.
Weghorst, who recently moved to United from Burnley, displayed promising hold-up play at Crystal Palace and Arsenal. On Wednesday, he provided a glimpse of his threat in the penalty area by reacting quickly to put the ball into the net with the outside of his boot after Hennessey’s pushed away Antony’s ambitious effort.
The 30-year-old took to social media to celebrate his first goal for his new club. Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong was amongst the many players to congratulate the Netherlands international.

The dynamic midfielder, who was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer, shares the Dutch dressing room with Weghorst. And the two might share the pitch in February when Barcelona and United meet in the Europa League playoff round.
