Frenkie de Jong is viewed as the ideal midfielder to solve Manchester United’s midfield issues. But the Dutchman has set his heart on staying at Barcelona.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a change of fortunes under Xavi this term, managing 20 La Liga starts so far.

Before United’s Europa League tie with Barcelona in February, Erik ten Hag praised his former Ajax prodigy, and despite his increased significance at Camp Nou, it is understood that there’s still interest at Old Trafford in acquiring the dynamic midfielder’s services.

However, De Jong has time and again expressed his desire to continue at the club of his ‘dreams’. It’s too early to rule out anything, but it’s best for United to start exploring his alternatives to ensure they don’t go another summer without addressing their build-up issues from deep.

Casemiro has had a transformational effect on United’s defensive structure, often single-handedly nipping opposition counter-attacks in the bud. But the ex-Real Madrid man hasn’t been able to help his teammates during the build-up phase as much.

United still need a midfielder who is comfortable in possession – De Jong or someone else.

FC Lorient midfielder Enzo Le Fee is making waves in the Ligue 1 with his passing range and ball-carrying ability. Further, his work out of possession is as impressive as his role in the side’s progressive play.

The 23-year-old has confirmed he’s looking for a summer transfer. “It’s time for me to leave Lorient. I will no longer extend the contract, I waited for new proposal in December but then it didn’t arrive. It’s time to go. I hope to leave this summer so my transfer brings money to Lorient,” he said (Fabrizio Romano via Le Telegramme).

A host of European clubs are interested in Le Fee. Considering United’s needs, they should join the queue before it’s too late.
