Manchester United player could return to his former club
Wout Weghorst is a striker in demand despite a less-than-prolific return at Manchester United.
The Dutchman left Besiktas mid-season to join the Red Devils to fill in the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo. Through his movement and pressing, Weghorst has helped the likes of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes cut open defences more easily, but as far as putting the ball into the back of the net is concerned, he has not proved to be an upgrade on the Portuguese talisman.
Weghorst has scored just two goals in 22 appearances under Erik ten Hag, and is yet to open his account in the Premier League this season. Anthony Martial, meanwhile, scored a league goal in his third game after returning to full fitness.
However, Weghorst enjoyed a fine goal-scoring stint with Besiktas, scoring eight goals in 16 league appearances before moving to United in January. He joined Besiktas on loan from Burnley last summer.
Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst wanted by his former club
As per The Sun, the Super Lig outfit are preparing to make a second move for the 30-year-old forward at the end of his loan spell at Old Trafford. Burnley would prefer a permanent transfer but a loan return to Besiktas seems most likely.
Ten Hag has regularly lauded Weghorst’s impact going forward and has also used the striker as a No 10 due to his impressive anticipation and link-up play. But ever since Martial’s return, the Dutch coach has seldom hesitated in dropping the striker from his starting XI. He recently said United play better when Martial is fit.
With United searching for a new number nine and Martial appearing to be firmly in Ten Hag’s plans, it’s best for Weghorst to return to Besiktas or even soon-to-be promoted Burnley for that matter.
