Manchester United’s winning run in the pre-season came to an end in Texas, as Real Madrid dominated the Red Devils to secure a 2-0 comfortable win.
Erik ten Hag, who before the clash against Arsenal in New Jersey insisted his side don’t play “friendly” games, would certainly be disappointed with the result, and more importantly United’s performance against a competent midfield.
Luka Modric, Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga enjoyed a brilliant outing against United’s midfield that suffered a very early blow with Kobbie Mainoo’s injury. Christian Eriksen replaced the youngster and created some good chances, but the Red Devils never managed to control the game for a significant stretch.
Manchester United eyeing a move for Sofyan Amrabat
United didn’t need the Real Madrid beating to know they lack quality in midfield. But it’s being reported the Premier League giants have now stepped up their efforts to revamp the area.
According to talkSPORT, they are working on selling Fred, actively encouraging talks with Galatasary to facilitate his exit. Fulham are also monitoring the situation of the 30-year-old, who Ten Hag is ‘willing to sacrifice’ to raise funds for his desired target.
The Dutch coach wants United to sign Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina. The Morocco international was one of the stand-out players of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It’s understood he’s ‘very keen’ to move to Manchester.
However, having already spent north of £50m on Mason Mount, Ten Hag will have to sell before he’s allowed to spend more on addressing his midfield.
United are hoping to raise £20m through Fred’s sale. Scott McTominay is another player who rarely starts under Ten Hag and could fetch a decent transfer fee amid interest from West Ham. However, the United boss is happy to keep the academy midfielder.
