Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur brought their midfield issues to the fore.
In the first half, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount pressed high to great effect and forced plenty of turnovers, but the forwards failed to make the most of these opportunities. The aggressive approach from the visitors left Casemiro isolated on more than one occasion and allowed Spurs to counter-attack multiple times. After the break, the hosts benefitted from the space United players left behind and took the lead through Pape Matar Sarr.
When chasing the game, the same midfield lacked composure in possession to push the home side closer to their box effectively. They ended up conceding another goal before full-time.

Fortunately for Erik ten Hag, the United hierarchy have enough time to address the manager’s midfield concerns by adding a pass-heavy and defensively sound player to their ranks. And reports in France are suggesting that’s exactly what the English club is planning to do.
As per L’Équipe (via GFFN) United have shown interest in Marco Verratti. The Italian star has been made available for sale by Paris Saint-Germain.

Les Parisiens are in the midst of a big rebuild this summer and have already sold their superstar Neymar to Al-Hilal. More high-profile exits are expected, with the report suggesting Verratti is viewed as surplus to requirements in Luis Enrique’s squad. He didn’t start or even sat on the bench in PSG’s 1-1 draw at Toulouse over the weekend.
There’s a belief that a deal could be done for around €60m for the 30-year-old. Bayern Munich are also keeping an eye on the situation. Verratti enjoyed a great stint under Thomas Tuchel, who’s now at the helm at Bayern.
