Raphael Varane might’ve lost his place to Harry Maguire in Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup, but he’s still attracting interest from European giants Bayern Munich.

The Frenchman has only started four Premier League games this term. Earlier in the season, his absence was due to his injury struggles, but lately, Ten Hag has opted to go with Maguire instead of him for tactical reasons. With Lisandro Martinez unavailable due to a long-term injury, the England international remains the United boss’s most reliable centre-back in possession.

Reports suggest Varane respects Ten Hag’s decision and is willing to fight his way into the starting XI. However, it seems the Dutch coach will continue to rely on Maguire’s composure and passing range as long as Martinez isn’t available, making it tough for the World Cup winner to start regularly in the meantime. Meanwhile, Jonny Evans is the preferred option for the left-sided spot in the backline, as he is comfortable with both feet.

It seems other clubs are starting to take note of Varane’s situation, with Bayern Munich understood to be one of the early suitors ahead of the January transfer window.

As per Florian Plettenberg, the Bundesliga giants have considered the 30-year-old and discussions have taken place. Bayern have supposedly been informed his departure is possible in January for a fee between £17.5m and £26.2m. Although a loan is not an option at this stage.

For now, a move to Munich is viewed as unrealistic due to Varane’s salary – believed to be more than £17m – but a deal remains under observation in the coming weeks.

Varane isn’t the only United star who could end up exiting Old Trafford in the next few months. The Red Devils are also reportedly planning to cut ties with the likes of Antony, Anthony Martial, and Jadon Sancho.
