Borussia Dortmund have set their sights on Sergio Reguilon, who’s currently on loan at Manchester United from Tottenham Hotspur.

United signed the Spain international during the summer transfer window to address an injury crisis at the left-back position. At the time, both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were on the sidelines (the latter still is) and the Red Devils had decided to loan out academy full-back Álvaro Fernández.

The Spurs loanee had an encouraging start at Old Trafford but as soon as Shaw became available for selection Reguilon found himself on the bench. With Malacia also expected to return to full fitness early in January, the Spanish defender is only going to fall further down the pecking order.

The 27-year-old’s loan transfer includes a January break clause which now might help him find a team where he could get regular minutes.

According to Sky reporter Patrick Berger, Dortmund are open to handing Reguilon that opportunity. In fact, it’s believed he’s on top of their transfer wish list for the winter window. The Bundesliga outfit have already made an enquiry for a six-month loan.

Dortmund’s star left-back Raphaël Guerreiro departed to Bayern Munich in the summer and was replaced by Ramy Bensebaini, who has started 10 Bundesliga games this term so far. However, Bensebaini will be representing Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations from January and as a result will miss several games, intensifying the need for a new left-back in Edin Terzic’s squad.

Accordingly, Reguilon seems to fit the bill for what Dortmund need.
