Manchester United and Benfica are holding talks for Alvaro Fernandez’s transfer.
The Spanish left-back, who joined United’s academy from Real Madrid in 2020, is set for another move, having joined Granada on loan only last summer. Before that, he spent a season on loan in the Championship with Preston North End.
The 20-year-old has enjoyed a promising stint in La Liga so far, featuring in 13 league games. However, United have seemingly decided to recall him from Granada amid interest from Benfica.
Benfica want Manchester United left-back
According to Fabrizio Romano, conversations between United and Benfica are ongoing over final details for Fernandez’s transfer.
The Italian transfer expert further suggests it will be a loan deal that would see Fernandez leave Spain for Portugal. The player has also accepted personal terms with the Portuguese outfit.
If it is indeed a loan move, it makes little sense to change clubs mid-season, especially when Fernandez has been delivering impressive performances for Granada, although there’s no debating he would have benefitted from more starts. Out of his 13 league appearances, only five have come from the get-go.
Having said that, Fernandez might benefit from playing for a progressive side competing on all fronts. Roger Schmidt’s Benfica are in a tight title race with Sporting CP, trailing the Lisbon-based outfit by just a point. Granada, meanwhile, sit 19th in the La Liga table.
