Benfica are set to turn Alvaro Fernandez’s loan move from Man Utd into a permanent transfer this summer.
On Thursday, Diogo Dalot was rewarded with Manchester United’s Players’ Player of the Year award. The big reason behind the honour is the Portuguese star’s impressive performance from the right flank this season.
However, it won’t be far-fetched to say that the way the natural right-back slotted in at the left-back position on several occasions must’ve helped him earn respect from his teammates.
Dalot had to step up as a left-back due to United’s injury crisis at the position, with both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia missing a big chunk of the season through injuries.
Considering Ten Hag’s side’s predicament in that position, many expect United to prioritize bringing in a new left-back this summer. However, ahead of the summer window, one left-back has departed Old Trafford on a permanent basis.
Manchester United lose Alvaro Fernandez to Benfica – Fabrizio Romano
Alvaro Fernandez left Man Utd to join Granada on loan at the start of the season. However, in January, Benfica placed their trust in his abilities after seeing his performances in Spain.
The 21-year-old moved to Portugal in the winter transfer window. After initial struggles, he started to show his skills from the left flank, ending the season with 16 Benfica appearances under his belt. Accordingly, the Portuguese outfit have decided to sign the talent permanently.
As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Benfica triggered a buy option to make the loan transfer permanent. “Deal completed today,” added Romano.

While Fernandez has agreed to sign a five-year contract with Benfica, Man Utd will receive a fee in the region of €6m. Further, it is understood that United will have a buy-back clause as well as a sell-on clause for the player.
Fernandez moved to United’s academy from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020 and departs without making any senior appearance in red.
