Manchester United have announced the permanent departure of Alvaro Fernandez.

Erik ten Hag led the Red Devils to a convincing 2-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley, sealing his second trophy in England in as many seasons. Still, that hasn’t secured his position at Old Trafford, with the club hierarchy yet to make any final decision public.

United remain tight-lipped over the suggestions of his exit. However, they have started confirming departures of other first-team figures.

Raphael Varane’s exit this summer was confirmed before the FA Cup final, while United announced Anthony Martial is leaving on Tuesday. In the midst of this, they also finalized another transfer.

Benfica sign Manchester United defender Alvaro Fernandez

After their FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City, Manchester United announced Alvaro Fernandez has joined Benfica on a permanent transfer.

The 21-year-old talented full-back moved to Portugal in January, joining Benfica on a loan deal after a promising stint at Granada. The winter deal saw the Portuguese giant include a buy option to turn Fernandez’ transfer permanent this summer.

Now, Benfica have exercised the option having been impressed by the left-back’s performances. He made 16 appearances and scored one goal for the Eagles.

According to The Telegraph’s James Ducker, Fernandez joins Benfica in a deal worth a total of €9m. The Portuguese outfit will pay an initial fee of €6m with a further €3m in performance and appearance-based add-ons.

Further, United, who signed the player from Real Madrid’s academy, also have a sell-on clause and buyback option.

Having shipped Fernandez permanently, United’s focus should be on bringing a new left-back to Carrington, as both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia continue to struggle with injuries.
