Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

The Red Devils are hoping to reinforce three key positions this summer, one of which is defensive midfield. With Casemiro in decline and Sofyan Amrabat’s loan extension still up in the air, Erik ten Hag’s team lacks a first-choice CDM at the moment.

The Old Trafford hierarchy has been actively scanning the transfer market to plug this major hole in their squad. Recent reports even linked them with a potential move for West Ham’s Edson Alvarez.

But now, the 20-time English champions appear to have shifted their focus onto the newly-crowned Ligue 1 winners.

PSG’s Manuel Ugarte emerges as surprise Manchester United target

According to Sky Sports, PSG’s Manuel Ugarte—currently representing Uruguay at the Copa America—has surprisingly emerged as Manchester United’s new midfield target.

The 23-year-old, who moved to the French capital from Sporting Lisbon in a £51.1 million switch last summer, is said to be “one of a number of players” United are looking at.

The young midfielder made a bright start to his PSG career at the beginning of last season. However, his lack of compatibility with Luis Enrique’s preferred style of football, coupled with the gradual decline in his form over the season, saw Ugarte fall down the Parisian pecking order.

Meanwhile, French publication L’Equipe has claimed that the Mancunian giants have already made their first offer for Ugarte. While PSG have turned it down, there’s still hope for United, as the French champions are “not closed to negotiations” for Ugarte just yet.

Could Manchester United take advantage of Ugarte’s unfortunate PSG situation and sign the talented starlet on the cheap?
