Harry Maguire has come under heavy fire at Man United.

The Red Devils’ start to the campaign hasn’t gone off in an ideal manner, with the side leaking goals in a fashion that has precedent itself shocked.

As such, the bulk of the blame has been brought upon Harry Maguire with the United captain directly at the heart of a problematic backline.

The past few months haven’t been the best for Maguire with the English international suffering in form even for his country. A tumultuous pre-season incident during his holiday appears to have really left a mark.

While fans are out in force asking for him to be dropped from the starting lineup, there are arguments to be made for why he is still a very reliable option for the club.

In particular, two statistics from the last campaign paint this picture.

Firstly, United kept the most number of cleansheets of any top-division side in Europe last season. With 27 perfect records to their name, the Mancunian side were a defensive force to be reckoned with across all competitions.

At the heart of that statistic was the contribution of Harry Maguire. Signed from Leicester City last summer for a world-record fee paid for a centre-back, he certainly did his task well.

In fact, the efficacy of that addition can be seen when the reality that Maguire paid every single minute of United’s season comes to the fore.

The Englishman did not tire and was largely consistent. Even in his moments of folly, his bigger impact was evident.

As such, it can be construed that he is merely in a really poor spell of form at the moment. The mental toll of the past months cannot be denied either nor can the pressure for playing and leading a club like Man United.

Fans will certainly be hoping for him to bounce back into top form soon.
