Maguire Reveals What It’s Like To Defend Against Cavani In Training

Edinson Cavani’s weekend heroics have truly made him an overnight hero. When the Uruguayan striker was acquired late in the summer window, plenty of questions were raised. Chief among them raised doubt over his advanced age and whether or not he will be able to function adequately in the Premier League.

When Cavani was handed the no.7 jersey that has gained much fame at Old Trafford, critics also suggested that the free-agent acquisition was largely a PR move and would not feature heavily into Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s tactical essence.

However, on Sunday, all that was put to rest for the time being as the 33-year-old came off the bench to assist a goal and score two of his own to complete an excellent 3-2 comeback away to Southampton.

The experienced striker has been long hailed for his movement. Past gametime along with Bruno Fernandes has led fans to speculate that Cavani would soon become adept at predicting his teammates and making excellent creative runs thereon.

Sure enough, his goalscoring prowess on Sunday emerged largely from thrusting himself into the right place at the right time to use his head well, in every sense.

In fact, Harry Maguire is already a fan of the veteran’s ability to do so, as he has been quoted to have said: “His movement is excellent in the box, it is top and the best I have faced in training.”

The United captain’s words certainly reflected excellently on Cavani’s true potential.

However, what is key now is for the veteran to continue this form for the rest of the season. The crowded fixture-list will certainly benefit from his inclusion.

More importantly too, United’s roster needn’t get too reliant on him, with the likes of Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood now having the onus upon them to improve and step up to the task.
