“We Won Trophies” – Jesse Lingard Talks About Former United Manager Jose Mourinho
Jesse Lingard has shed light on his relationship with Jose Mourinho, crediting the former Manchester United manager for making him “a winner”.
The current AS Roma boss managed the Englishman between 2016-2018, as he enjoyed the best spell of his career, winning the League Cup and Europa League in 2017, before falling down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Lingard eventually had to leave United in January for West Ham in order to revive his confidence.
Impressed with his exploits on loan, Solskjaer decided to give the United academy graduate another chance this season. The 28-year-old has done well so far, scoring and assisting two crucial winners off the bench against West Ham and Villarreal respectively.
Looking back on his career up to date, Lingard shared several highlights of his career with The Players’ Tribune, including his time under the Portuguese tactician.
“Me and Jose had a good relationship generally, though, I have to say. He was good to me. Before all the injury stuff, he trusted me, put me in for important games,” he said.
“We won trophies and he made me a winner. He could just bring out that side in you.”
The England international was a crucial figure in Mourinho’s successful debut season at Old Trafford, scoring a goal in the EFL Cup final against Southampton.
And he will certainly look to play a similar part, despite limited minutes, in ending the Red Devils’ trophy drought in what could be his final season at the club.
