Manchester United are planning a move for Genoa goalkeeper Josep Martinez, according to reports.

The Red Devils need to seriously bolster their squad ahead of the new season, with central defence, defensive midfield, centre forward and left-back among the positions they must prioritise.

But with Financial Fair Play (FFP) looming, the Old Trafford club has a very limited budget for signings—unless they sell some of their existing players to add to their transfer kitty.

Amid such a difficult situation, the Premier League giants have raised several eyebrows by seemingly registering their interest in… a goalkeeper!

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri (via UnitedInFocus), Manchester United are eyeing a move for Genoa goalkeeper Josep Martinez. He has even claimed that the 20-time English champions will make an offer as early as “today”.

Having honed his craft in Barcelona’s fabled La Masia academy, Martinez joined Genoa from RB Leipzig back in 2022.

Over the course of last season, the 26-year-old has blossomed into one of Serie A’s most highly-rated goalkeepers. The Spaniard, who has been capped just once by Spain, is an acrobatic and athletic shot-stopper.

Martinez has already attracted strong interest from Inter, who are reportedly edging closer to securing a deal that would cost them an initial £12.5 million.

It remains to be seen whether Manchester United compete with the Italian champions and make a concrete offer of their own.

If they do, the move will certainly raise questions over Altay Bayindir’s future at the Mancunian club, considering Andre Onana has already made the starting spot his own.
