Jose Mourinho Hits Bump In Jose Fonte Pursuit

Southampton new boss Claude Puel believes that no one, including Jose Mourinho, will be taking Jose Fonte away from the Saints this season.

Jose Fonte just recently returned to Southampton training, after the 32-year-old took part in Portugal’s Euro 2016 triumph.

Fonte has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer. However, new boss Claude doesn’t think that the veteran defender will leave Southampton this year.

Puel took over the reins at St. Mary’s only a few days ago, and is believed to have the skills to take Southampton somewhere special. He spoke to the media regarding Southampton captain, Jose Fonte:

“I do not think there is a possibility for Jose to leave us,” the new boss started. “I am sure that he can play all these games, he is very proficient.

“When I see him on the pitch he is interesting, very professional and he has a good attitude.

“[Fonte has] re-joined in training. I do not know if he will start the game [against Watford on Saturday] but we will see.

“The market window is difficult for the club and the players but it is very important for the team. Many clubs can be interested in players that is normal.”

Jose Mourinho has been looking for an older, more experienced defender to add to his squad, with Jose Fonte and Leonardo Bonucci said to be his two targets.

Ideally, Mourinho would have preferred Fonte, as he has got the necessary experience in the Barclays Premier League. But, it seems that the Special One will have to look elsewhere if he is to find another suitable defender.

Manchester United have already secured a defender this summer, Eric Bailly. The young Ivorian signed from Spanish side Villarreal for a massive £30 million, and has already shown the United fans what kind of performances he is capable of.
