Manchester City Looking To Sign Virgil Van Dijk To Replace Kompany
Manchester City are in the hunt for Southampton central defender Virgil van Dijk.
Pep Guardiola has a problem in central defence, with captain Vincent Kompany injured once again and ruled out for 6 weeks. According to the Daily Star, the Spaniard is looking to bring the £30 million-rated Virgil van Dijk to the Etihad in the January transfer window to make up for Kompany’s absence.
One of the characteristics that Guardiola looks for in his defenders is whether they are good on the ball, and the Dutch international certainly ticks that box. And at 25 years of age, he is also a signing for the future, when the need arises to completely replace Kompany.

The Manchester club are willing to meet Southampton’s evaluation, but they face competition from Liverpool and Manchester United, who have also been strongly linked with the player.
All three clubs would be glad to have van Dijk in their team, especially Liverpool, who have had a lot of success signing Southampton players.
One problem that Manchester City would face is the fact that van Dijk signed a 5-year contract when he joined from Celtic last season.

City could find it difficult to prise away the player with such a long contract, but van Dijk wouldn’t want to reject an offer from a Champions League club and title contenders. The opportunity to play in Europe and fight for titles would be too much to resist.
And if City do meet Southampton’s evaluation, it would be difficult for the club to say no as well, even if it is difficult to find a replacement in January.
