Gareth Southgate Appointed As New England Manager

Gareth Southgate has been appointed as the permanent manager of England football team on a 4-year deal.

The Football Association announced today that they have appointed Gareth Southgate as the new manager of England football team on a permanent basis. Southgate signed a 4-year deal, which will include both 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2020 European Championship. It is understood that the salary will be around £1.5m-a-year.

Gareth Southgate previously worked as a manager for England U-21 side, and in September, was appointed as the interim manager of senior team following Sam Allardyce’s departure.

He was interviewed by FA’s selection panel last week, and Chief Executive Martin Glenn, Technical Director Dan Ashworth and Chairman Greg Clarke agreed upon the deal to make Gareth Southgate the manager of England football team on a permanent basis.

Following his appointment, Southgate said: “I am extremely proud to be appointed England manager. However, I’m also conscious that getting the job is one thing, now I want to do the job successfully.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with the players over these past four games and I think there’s huge potential. I’m determined to give everything I have to give the country a team that they’re proud of and one that they’re going to enjoy watching play and develop. For me, the hard work starts now.”

Southgate made almost 650 appearances with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough during his 18-year playing career. He also earned 57 caps for the Three Lions during the same period, and represented England in two World Cups and two European Championships.

Southgate’s first match will be an international friendly against Germany on March 22, in Dortmund. Four days after the friendly, his England team will face Lithuania in a World Cup Qualifier in Wembley.
