Arsenal Plotting A Move For Benfica Winger
According to various sources, Arsenal are planning a move to sign Benfica winger Gonçalo Guedes.
On Tuesday, The Sun reported that Arsenal are planning to sign Benfica youngster Gonçalo Guedes. The Premier League club sent their scouts to watch him play during Benfica’s 1-0 win against Estoril.
This 20-year-old has played 24 games for Benfica, and has also made 2 appearances for Portuguese national team. He has also become one of the young sensations in Portugal, and is now a transfer target for many European clubs.
It is understood that Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is yet to decide on his future at the club. The 23-year-old England international has been subbed off in 27 of his last 34 starts over the last two seasons. And now, the latest rumours linking Guedes to Arsenal have further fuelled speculation on Chamberlain’s future.
During the summer transfer window, Spanish club Valencia tried to sign Guedes for a sum of €30m, but their bid wasn’t enough for Benfica to accept the offer. This clearly means Arsenal will have to prepare an offer above €30m if they want to bring Guedes to the Emirates.
Guedes has a release clause of €60m, which gives Benfica an extra advantage while negotiating the deal. In addition to that, his agent Jorge Mendes will also play a key role in deciding the player’s future.
It won’t be a surprise if Guedes snubs Arsenal and joins Manchester United – who have also been reported as interested – considering the relationship Jorge Mendes shares with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.
