Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was ready to let one of his summer signings leave Old Trafford in the January window.

That’s what former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys is claiming, but he has also admitted that Mourinho has since changed his mind completely.

The United boss splashed out millions to bring in Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Paul Pogba in his first summer at Old Trafford. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, however, joined the Red Devils on a free transfer after he decided not to extend his contract with Paris St-Germain.

And Keys now claims Mourinho was convinced that he would hand one of those men an early exit.

He wrote in his blog: “The irony of United’s recent good form is that it’s largely down to half a dozen players that Mourinho had written off after deciding he didn’t want them!

“I can also tell you that he’d said to one of them recently ‘I made a mistake buying you in the summer. You can leave in January’. He’s changed his mind now! I’ll let you work out who the player was.”

Of the four, Keys is perhaps most likely to be talking about Mkhitaryan. The Armenian wasn’t able to hit the ground running after his big-money move from Borussia Dortmund. He failed to complete his first 90 minutes of football for his new employers until November 30, in the EFL Cup fixture against West Ham.

But the scenario has totally changed; he has now worked his way into the first eleven, and even unleashed a stunning scorpion kick goal in last month’s victory over Sunderland.
