Gary Neville: ‘I Have Never Been To Liverpool Without A Police Escort’

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has joked about needing a police escort every time he visited Liverpool.
Gary Neville has been involved in the heated Manchester United-Liverpool fixtures numerous times, and the Englishman has also been in the center of many a controversies during his playing career, due to which he isn’t too popular among the fans of the Merseyside Club.
This fact was recently highlighted by the decorated right-back, who has won 8 Premier League titles and 2 Champions Leagues with the Old Trafford club, amongst other major titles, while speaking on Soccer AM.
The Englishman was quoted as saying (via Mirror): “I’ve never been without a police escort! I’ve never been to Liverpool in my life – let’s be clear on that. Every time I’ve been to Liverpool I’ve had a police escort – obviously on the coach with United.
“As a pundit working with Sky – let’s say I have to be there for a three o’clock kick-off – I’m there at 11 in the morning before any one of them turns up. And I’m there until eight o’clock at night when they’ve all gone home. Let them all relax and calm down. They don’t want to see me, do they?”

The former Red Devil also talked about the heated rivalry the two English powerhouses shared on the pitch, and referred to the matches he has played against Liverpool as the “hardest games”.
“The pitch was so tight, the fans were up for it – you knew full well if you won at Anfield it was a massive achievement,” Neville added.
“You got huge abuse. You took a throw-in on that far side and you got that feeling: there’s going to be a punch on the back of my head here. They can reach me. It’s going to come one day. Either that or a load of beer or… something else.”
