Man City Ready To Break Transfer Record For Benfica Keeper

Manchester City are looking to buy Benfica keeper Ederson in a deal that could break the record for costliest goal-keeper.

The 23-year old is expected to join the Citizens for £35m, which is slightly higher than the £33m Juventus paid Parma for Gianluigi Buffon. The Italian switched clubs in 2001, and the world record has stayed intact since then.

Ederson is rumoured to join Pep Guardiola’s team after Benfica’s Taca de Portugal final against Vitoria Guimaraes on Sunday, according to Goal.com. The Sky Blues are looking to do quick business in the transfer window, having already signed Bernardo Silva from AS Monaco.

The reported fee for the Brazilian is very steep, but going by the rate at which the transfer fees are increasing, it might seem inexpensive very soon.

City are in dire need of a good goalkeeper next season. Guardiola let Joe Hart leave for Torino on loan, after being reportedly unhappy with his footwork. The Spaniard reunited with former Barcelona keeper Claudio Bravo, who ended up making blunders with alarming regularity, following which Pep had to give way to Willy Caballero.

The Argentine was allowed to recently, though, leaving the City squad with a big gap to fill. Hart will also be most likely sold in the summer, giving way for Ederson to come into the team.

The goalkeeping record is likely to be broken again in the summer, as David De Gea and Thibaut Courtois have also been linked with moves away from their respective clubs, and either transfer is expected to be worth more than Buffon’s.
