UEFA Champions League Final: Madrid The Real Winners
The world came to a standstill last night as the momentous occasion of the Champions League Final brought together two of modern football’s biggest giants in a match that was eventually nothing short of spectacular. The Serie A winners, Juventus, were up against defending champions and La Liga winners Real Madrid in Cardiff, as they battled it out to claim the highest honour possible in club level football.
The match began in spectacular fashion with both teams bringing their A game out to the pitch, but it was Zidane’s men who drew first blood as main man Cristiano Ronaldo slotted in from within the box and sent the fans of the Spanish club into wild celebrations.
That lead was, however, cut short by Mario Mandzukic later in the first 45 minutes, who scored an unstoppable over head kick with his back to the goal. The goal was a fine example of how the first half passed by, as both teams went hammer and tongs at each other and made the match a spectacle worth watching with jaws wide open and no time to blink.
It was the latter half of the game that decided the direction the result tilted in, as the Spanish side came out all guns blazing and bagged in a goal through Casemiro’s long range deflected effort. The team soon added a third through their iconic number 7, and after Cuadrado was shown a red card in the final stages, Marco Asensio put the final nail in the Old Lady’s coffin and helped his side lift the title with the help of a resounding 4-1 scoreline.
Real Madrid clinched their 12th major European crown and became the first side ever to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League title. It was a night that was highlighted by Ronaldo’s brilliance, and after getting his hands on his 4th UCL glory, a 5th Ballon D’Or is all but certainly heading his way this year too.
